Total Solar Eclipse

Monday, August 21, 2017

A total solar eclipse occurs when the moon completely covers the sun, casting a shadow onto earth. If you happen to be in this shadow, darkness will occur and the air will cool as if it were night. Partial solar eclipses occur more often, but the last total solar eclipse in Missouri occurred in 1869 and was nowhere near St. Louis. This is a once in a lifetime event! The parks department will host interactive activities showing just how difficult and how rare the odds are for this astronomical event to occur. Activities will include making your own model of a solar eclipse, constructing a sundial, and building a pinhole viewer. These activities are friendly to all ages. There is no cost to participate. There will be eclipse viewing glasses available for purchase for $1. Please note it is not safe to look directly at the sun without eye protection at anytime except during totality of the eclipse.
