Did you know… The first outdoor light strings were sold in 1927 and in a string of just 7 bulbs. General Electric and the Edison Electric companies sponsored many neighborhood “decorating with color-light” contests in an effort to increase sales of the lights. The effort worked flawlessly; within several years many local communities were holding their very own contests. The City of Sunset Hills has hosted such a contest for over 10 years. Each year the Pool Advisory Board and the Parks Board meet one night in December to judge local houses in the contest. This year the board members will be out taking pictures and judging homes on Monday, December 15th for our Holiday Lighting Contest. Houses need to be registered with the Parks and Recreation Department to be entered into the contest. After registering your house all you have to do is have your outdoor light lit by 6:00pm on Monday, December 15th.
