When I call 911, how does the Police Department know where I am?
All telephone numbers have been routed into the 911 system to connect to the police agency responsible for that location. Sunset Hills dispatchers answer all calls made in Sunset Hills to 911. The 911 system automatically displays the telephone number and address to the dispatcher of any incoming 911 call. The dispatcher will then obtain the nature of the emergency, verify the address and send the appropriate units. All 911 calls that originate from a cellular telephone will connect you directly to the St. Louis County Police Department. If your are calling from a cellular phone you will need to advise the dispatcher the exact location of the emergency so they can connect you to the proper agency. Please remember, 911 is a powerful tool that has saved many lives, but it should be used in emergencies only.
